Usage Feedback

Hi,

I am a seasoned geocacher used to using my Garmin.   Wanted to consolidate, and be able to geocache anytime I had my phone with me, so I downloaded/purchased GC Navigator 2.1.29, on my Verizon BB Storm 2.   First, great app!  Nice all in one, easy to setup and connect to my GC.com account.

But, some feedback if you will allow it:

  • eats the battery quickly.  Phone gets warm to the touch, using battery so quickly.   biggest drawback in my opinion.
  • loses connection with GPS.  GPS indicator is red.  If I reboot the phone it comes back.  restarting just the app is not enough.
  • Font size.   Would be nice to have a customized setting for font size, especially on the cache description, and logs.
  • Would be nice if app remembered last settings for search filters - i.e. number to display,  what types, etc.

Great app!  Please keep the new function/improvements coming!

Dave

Re: Usage Feedback
How on earth did you get this to work on a BB Storm 2?  I have been trying to get it to work for over two weeks and Trimble's tech support has been awful.

Didn't do anything special.  Purchased and downloaded from BB App World, and it installed the first time, no problems.  FWIW, I am on the latest OS - 5.0.0.713 from VZW.

Re: Usage Feedback
Hey Dave,

I have the same problem with my external bluetooth GPS on occasion - I will go in a building or have it in my pocket for too long and it will lose sync.

I find that restarting the app 2 or 3 times WILL usually recover the GPS connection. Be sure to wait 10 - 15 seconds between the time you exit the app and the time you fire it up again.

If you have the problem a lot try having another GPS app running in the background like BB maps. If one app does not keep the GPS awake the other one usually will. Of course the GPS in the BBs kind of suck, and if you go into the woods too far or under a 5-lane overpass you will usually drop the signal and have to goof around to get it going again. That's why I like my external bluetooth GPS - it has its own battery and all it draws off the phone is bluetooth power (although you are still hitting the data network too). The external GPSs chipsets are usually way more sensitive than the build in one and will usually tolerate going into wood frame buildings and deep cover if worn outside the pocket. Outdoors it can usually be in your pocket on the keychain, or in the ignition, etc without signal loss.... There are several brands out there, but I chose the Freedom Keychain 2000 GPS - it has the MTK chipset, which is supposedly the most sensitive one out there, with SirfStarII being a close second.

Re: Usage Feedback
Thanks.  I can't believe how much trouble I'm having with my BB Storm 2.  I wasn't running 5.0.0.713, so I loaded it today.  Then I reinstalled GN for Verizon.  Same problem.  It won't get past the initializing screen.  I also now notice that my BB Maps won't display.  I only get a green screen with diagonal lines across it.  No roads.  It seems to track my movement, but not on a map.
